Freefall Writing Workshops

“Freefall is a method some writers discover spontaneously, but many have to (re)learn: the technique of writing from the larger Self, beyond reach of the ego and its censors.”

Freefall Writing Online AEDST & WAST

Adapting to the pandemic and with so many other changes in 2020, Freefall workshops are now being held online. Still with the intimacy of a group of not more than 12, writers are finding that the online experience is allowing them to go deeper into their writing and sustain their writing habit beyond the week of Freefall.

Whether you are an experienced author or someone just starting out, your writing will benefit enormously from the Freefall Writing experience. From the first day, participants find their writing deepens and begins to flow, whatever their ultimate goal or focus. Over the course of the week, confidence grows and bold new projects emerge, while existing projects gain direction and clarity.

The workshops run over the course of one week, allowing you to escape the everyday and become immersed in your writing. There are a minimum of 8 and maximum of 12 participants in every workshop. The format allows you to develop your skills as a writer, with up to five hours of daily writing time and detailed, constructive feedback. Anonymous readings help you to see where your words really work, and to hone the skills of the writing craft.

Freefall around the world

Freefall Writing workshops are held internationally throughout the year. For more information, see https://freefallwriting.tumblr.com/.

Discover Freefall Writing

As the name suggests, Freefall Writing invokes the courage to fall without a parachute, into the words as they come, into the thoughts before they have fully formed in the mind, into the unplanned structures that take shape, without prompting, to contain them.

By means of five simple precepts, Barbara leads the writer step by step into developing real trust in writing through the art of Freefall.
1. Write what comes up for you.
2. Don’t change anything.
3. Give all the sensuous detail.
4. Go where the energy is, or go fearward.
5. Observe “The Ten-Year Rule”.

Online workshops run from Sunday to Saturday, providing five days of writing with daily feedback. Workshops are offered both privately and through universities in Canada, Australia, England and the United States (see Calendar Details). There are no entry requirements. Class size is limited to 12 participants. If you would like to host a workshop outside of the current schedule, please get in touch.

Group dynamics

At first, doing Freefall with a group is invaluable. The group’s spontaneous response to the writing works to free the writer from the need for self-criticism. And then the magic begins …

The moment when someone shifts into that deeper level is unmistakable. Everyone can hear it. As a result, in Coleridge’s phrase, “the wheels catch fire from their own motion,” and the whole group moves to a new level of achievement. The results, in writing, are spectacular.

Freefall works

Since 1982, Barbara Turner-Vesselago’s Freefall Writing Workshops have been helping beginning and experienced writers to overcome blocks, access energy, and establish or renew a vital connection to the written word.

In these workshops, you learn by doing: powerful writing immersion is balanced by informed, personal guidance. Every word you write is read by Barbara; selected (anonymous) passages are read aloud and discussed in a supportive, small-group setting. The primary emphasis is on learning to ‘let go’ in writing so that the creative process can carry you. Technical aspects of the craft (scene, dialogue, structure, voice) are discussed as they arise in the course of the writing.

Ultimately, Barbara helps you connect with your deepest intention in writing, and to write with authority and grace.

Barbara Turner-Vesselago’s “Freefall Writing” has helped hundreds of writers to publish fiction, memoir, non-fiction and poetry worldwide.
